THE Mondial, known for its wide presence in the small home appliance market, acquired the Sony factory in Manaus Free Trade Zone. According to a report of EstadãoThe Brazilian company is scheduled to launch TV, microwave and air conditioning in the second half of 2021. The value of the transaction has not been disclosed.
In September, Sony announced that it would discontinue production of TVs, audio and cameras in Brazil. The Manaus factory is scheduled to close next year, with operations interrupted in March 2021. The Japanese manufacturer’s products will go on sale here in the second half of the year.
In this scenario, Mondial is preparing to compete with giants like Samsung and LG. The company makes several products (such as DVDs and speakers) in a small factory in Manaus.
Now, the plans include doubling the production capacity of these units, in addition to expanding operations to the most premium brown and white products. According to Giovanni Marins Cardoso, Mondial’s founding partner, the manufacturer intends to “do in six months what has been planned for three years”.
About 200 Sony employees will be laid off
Mondial takes over operations at the factory in February 2021 and Sony employees working in this unit will not be “exploited”. Cardoso explains that professionals (about 200 workers) will be fired by the Japanese company, but will be able to apply for the recruitment process to recruit a Brazilian company.
During the second semester, Mondial plans to open 200 more vacancies to expand its production line. Currently, the company has 240 employees at the Manaus factory, in addition to the 3,500 experts at the Conceição do Jacuípe factory.
Mondial is a leader in the small home appliance market with annual sales of R $ 3 billion. In May, the company expanded its production capacity in Bahia by an additional R $ 47 million.
